VINEYARDS IN THEIR DORMANCY STAGE
The vine is a deciduous woody crop, what implies a biological adaptability to cold seasons and now it is in its dormant stage.
Now it is the time for winter pruning, one of the most painstaking works at the DOCa Rioja vineyards, when the cuts to correctly conform the vines have to be well appraised.
Autumn is here and the vine plants unleash their leaves presenting a "cold vignette", during which they accumulate their reserves in trunk and roots, that will be recycled as nutrients the next season.
Cold is necessary for the vineyards, otherwise they will be severe imbalances in the biological behavior of the vine plant such as, d sprouting delay, decrease in buds or delay in the grapes ripening.
The danger with cold, comes with the inopportune frosts, feared between April and May, which effect can be devastating once the buds are about to break.
