SNOW IN THE VINE YARD

SNOW IN THE VINE YARD

ene 08, 2018

These past days we have enjoyed the superb sight of our vineyards snow-covered . A fine white coating that converted them in a fairy tale-like landscape.  But do we know the effect that snow has in the vines? Here you will find out.

In winter, moment in which the vine is on its dormancy period, the plant can withstand below cero temperatures than can go from -12º to -15º Celsius, according to whether it is young or adult.  During this period of the year, some insects and fungus benefit from the bark to protect themselves from the cold and here is where the snow performs its sanitizer role when its freezing temperature eliminate them, thereby making the plant to reach spring in a healthy condition.

The snow has also a healing effect, as it helps to create a cover on the wounds that can be produced after pruning, preventing plant diseases.

Besides, the vine plant absorbes the snow bit by bit, what makes it a great water reserve.

Nature is wise, and we can conclude with a Spanish saying “Año de nieves, año de bienes”…that would mean something like “year of snow, year of prosperity”
